Positives: good location, very near Hbf. Bedroom décor simple but fine and nice and clean. Slight negatives: Exterior very dated, inside is much more modern but still in a dated building. Bathrooms clean but a bit dated. Worked fine though, plenty of hot water, shower good etc. Lift is old and wheezy. Internet access was a bit random, but worked eventually, and had a good download speed

The Center Hotel Essen is a perfectly fine place to stay if you need a last minute bed to sleep in, as I did. I don't think I would want to stay there for an extended trip. It's a couple blocks down from the train station; not the nicest part of town, but within walking distance to some restaurants and shops. The staff at check-in were very friendly and efficient; at check-out there was a little wait for someone to arrive at the front desk, but nothing egregious and she was clearly busy. The room was a standard Ikea sort, but comfortable enough. The free Wi-Fi worked better than other hotels where I've recently stayed, there was a kettle, and the bed was firm and clean. The bathroom was the low point. Let's just say the toilet was poorly designed. I believe free breakfast was included, but I didn't make time for it, so can't comment on it's quality.
